Post 1 - Proposal

Mystery, supernatural horror, the secret government processes that happen behind the scenes as the populous goes about their blissfully oblivious lives. Three tropes that really get my creative gears churning. They’re particular favorites of mine, to write and to read, and SCP has all three in spades. The SCP community is one I’ve only started engaging with recently and I definitely regret that. It’s a community rife with creativity, talent, and horror; three of my favorite things.

The SCP community is an online forum that is accessible to everyone and free to adapt and add to in any way they wish. The resulting online culture spawned around the mysterious SCP Foundation. A ‘supposedly’ fictional organization dedicated to the containment and study of the paranormal. These creatures, of which there are over 3000 now, are often fan generated and added to the extensive collection of SCPs. From the beneficial to the horrifying, said collection contains a menagerie of shapes, motifs, and temperaments that make for an eccentric and eclectic cast of characters that the community makes good use of in fanworks.

Due to all SCP content being under a creative commons licence, all aspects of the SCP canon are available to be adapted, artistically used, and even monetized, as long as the SCP source and all creators are at least credited. This extremely generous allowance has led to a thriving artistic community. Perhaps the best known work derived from this is the game, SCP Containment Breach, but that’s far from the only thing that was produced. SCP content, for example, has a special place on youtube where artists often produce informative and entertaining animations revolving around SCPs. This is what I want to explore in my content curation.

For this collection, I will be gathering ten hand (or digitally) drawn short animations regarding the SCP Foundation. This animation can be backstory, or simply an exploration of SCPs or their foundation. But they will all be 'drawn', not digitally rendered. That's a whole other kettle of fish.

I want to do this, firstly, for an element of nostalgia. These sorts of animations are how I got into this community. Watching video after video, slowly getting introduced to one SCP per video. Getting an impression for each one. Some of them left me looking over my shoulder at night for weeks, others made me cry. These sorts of animations are lovingly crafted to elicit an emotional response in you and it makes them a pleasure to watch. Second, because as I said, focusing on one SCP at a time and having a visual medium is a good way to be introduced to the (many) SCPs in the canon. A collection of new SCPs to learn about while also plugging some hard working and talented artists.
